About the Museum

The MCRD Command Museum boasts one of the most extensive and comprehensive displays of Marine Corps historical items in the Nation.The Museum has over 150,000 annual visitors and occupies 22,233 square feet of indoor space.

Mission

“To provide an educational setting that portrays the legacy of the Marine Corps for the training of recruits and the continuing education of Marines, that functions as a supporting arm to the recruiting effort, and that serves as a bridge to the civilian community.”

Admission is free, and military identification is not required, although admittance to the Depot requires a photo identification card, driver’s license, and proof of insurance if driving aboard base.

New on-line tour showcases Museum's exhibits...
Thanks to the efforts of the MCRD Museum Historical Society and a grant from the County of San Diego's County Enhancement Program, the Museum now has 15 different gallery and exhibit movie presentations on the web site. The movies vary in length from 90 seconds to about six minutes and provide an informative and educational tour of the Museum.

Depot Volunteer Award Dinner

Museum and Society Volunteers Recognized at Depot Event

Art Anderson was one of several volunteers recognized for their service to the Museum - Art received his 20-year Volunteer Service Award from Brig. Gen. Salinas, depot commander.

Art started working in the Museum when sawhorses were used in the galleries.




Depot Hosts a "Teach Vietnam" Education Conference

Teachers from across the country gathered at James L. Day Hall Friday and Saturday (May 2 and May 3) to participate in the first of three Teach Vietnam Conferences to be held nationally this year to share their best practices in teaching about the Vietnam War and to learn new techniques to bring back to their students.

“Our mission is to educate the public, especially students, about the lasting impact of Vietnam,” said Jan. C. Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. “We want students to be interested in the subject and understanding of the sacrifices Americans have made.”

Marine Corps history and those street names...

When you head out to run or jog around the Depot you pass roads with such names as: St. Thomas Ave., Belleau Ave., Guantanamo St., Henderson Ave., Seminole St., Chosin Ave., Tientsen Ave. and Tripoli Ave., to name only a few. Even an uneducated guess will tell you these names have significance in Marine Corps history. So, where are these avenues and streets, and what do they represent that is of importance to us all?
