PHILLIPS HALL 13 GYM 3-Dec-51 Phillips Hall was dedicated in memory of two brothers, Cpl Richard H. and 2nd Lt Robert Phillips, who died in service of their country in Korea. Their father has been a Chief of Staff at MCRDSD
PENDLETON HALL 31 DEPOT HQ 31-May-61 MajGen Joseph H. Pendleton was instrumental in advocating that San Diego be chosen as the location of a permanent Marine Corps Base on California's southern coast. He raised the flag on the 2nd Advanced Base Force on 01 Dec 1921 as the first commanding officer.
MARTINI HALL 622 CONSOLIDATED PERSONNEL 23-Apr-87 Martini Hall was named after Marine PFC Gary W. Martini, who was the 16th Marine to receive the Medal of Honor for gallantry in Viet Nam. He underwent recruit training in 1966 at San Diego's Recruit Depot.
LEJEUNE HALL 28 RTR HQ 31-May-61 Lejeune Hall was named after LtGen John Archer Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. He served with the AEF in France where he commanded an Army division, the only Marine Corps general ever to do so. He is also responsible for the adoption of the current Marine Corps colors of scarlet and gold.
BURKE HALL 626 RECRUIT TRNG FACILITY 30 JE 1988 Burke Hall was named for PFC Robert C. Burke, the 32nd Marine to receive the Medal of Honor for valor in Viet Nam. PFC Burke enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and went to boot camp at MCRDSD.
MCDOUGALL HALL 30 THEATER 27-Feb-56 McDougall Hall was named in honor of MGen Douglas O. McDougal, Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, San Diego, May 1935 - May 1937.
SHEP CNTR 638 CHILD DEVELOPMENT 15-May-92 The Child Development Center was named in honor of Virginia Shepherd, wife of General Lemuel Shepherd, 20th Commandant of the Marine Corps. She was chosen for this honor because of her demonstrated love and concern for all children.
DALY BARRACKS 1 SUPT BN & CVIC 31-May-61 SgtMaj Daniel is one of only two Marines who were twice awarded the Medal of Honor for separate deeds. His first award was in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion as a private; his 2nd was in Haiti as a GySgt. General Smedley Butler, the other double Medal of Honor recipient, called Dan Daly, "The fightin'est Marine I ever knew."
DUNCAN HALL 620 PERM PERS CHOW HALL 20-Oct-86 Duncan Hall is named for Cpl Richard W. Duncan who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry in Viet Nam in 1967. He went through boot camp at MCRDSD.
PARKE HALL 639 SWIM TANK 15 JLY 1999 Parke Hall was named after Marine Captain Edward Parke, Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment aboard the USS INDIANAPOLIS, which was sunk by a Japanese submarine on 30 July 1945. Using his combat swimming training he valiantly strove to corral and keep afloat a group of sailors and Marines who survived the sinking. He finally succumbed to exhaustion and drowned.
JMS L DAY HALL 26 MUSEUM 15 JLY 2003 James L. Day Hall was named after MGen James L. Day, who served in three wars and was a Commanding Officer of the Recruit Training Command in San Diego and later, a Commanding General of MCRDSD. In 1998, he finally received a Medal of Honor for his courage and gallantry in the Battle of Okinawa 1945. One of the reasons he was selected for this honor was that he was deeply concerned with the preservation of historical and cultural heritage.
SHEP FIELD 635 DRILL FIELD & REV STAND 22-Apr-91 Shepherd Memorial Drill Field and Pavilion was named after Gen Lemuel C. Shepherd, 20th Commandant of the Marine Corps, who fought the very battles that defined the Corps and its warrior ethos. He fought in three wars and his leadership continues to serve as an inspiration to all Marines.
MASCOT MON MASCOT MONUMENT 11-Aug-50 This monument was erected in memory of all Depot mascots. It is inscribed with the names of James Jolly Plum Duff, Soochow, Duffy's Limey Grog, Jigger, and Duffy.
BEESON FIELD SOFTBALL FIELD 26-Apr-50 Beeson Field was named in honor of Major Donald M. Beeson, illustrious athlete and exemplary Marine, 1928-1948. He excelled in baseball, football, basketball, and tennis. Initially a baseball field, it became a softball field in 1971.
THOMPSON CIRC TRAFFIC CIRCLE Unknown Thompson Circle was dedicated in memory of Col. Roy H. Thompson, Chief of Staff at MCRDSD, from 1 Jan 1968 until he died of a stroke on 25 June 1970. It is located at the end of Wharton Road, "Officers Row."
HALL FIELD FOOTBALL FIELD 17-Nov-56 Hall Field was named in honor of BGen Elmer E. Hall, USMC, in recognition of his contribution to Marine Corps football. He played football from 1917-1925 and coached from 1919-1940. In 1924, then Capt. Hall was ordered to San Diego to start a football program.
SRSEN HALL 623 RECRUIT PROCESSING CNTR 31-Oct-86 The Recruit Processing Center was named in memory of PFC Steve Albert Srsen, posthumous recipient of the Navy Cross for gallantry in Viet Nam on 27 Jan 1967. He went to boot camp at MCRDSD.
LOTT FIELD BASE RECREATION FIELD 26-May-39 Maj Charles McL. Lott was the football coach at MCB from 1935-1938. The Base's recreation field was named after him, making it the first known named facility. Later, the field gave way to the barracks and other facilities used by WRs.
MICHAEL V JOHNSON BRANCH MEDICAL CLINIC 596 BRANCH MEDICAL CLINIC 17-Sep-03 Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Michael Van Johnson, Jr. USN (Deceased) was killed in action on 25 March 2003, while administring first aid to a wounded Marine on the battlefield in Iraq. Prior to deploying to Iraq, Corpsman Vann Johnson served as company corpsman for the recruits of Company H, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, MCRDSD.
