The MCRD Museum Foundation held its Quarterly Breakfast today at MCRD’s Duncan Hall Messhall. The guest of honor was Colonel Jim Gruny, Commanding Officer, Recruit Training Regiment. Colonel Gruny briefed the guests on the status of recruit... training and how MCRD continues to make Marines of the highest caliber.

“The bottom line message I want to give you today is, we still make Marines like we used to,” said Gruny. “The recruits leave here with a stronger moral foundation than what they came here with, and to top it off once they achieve the physical, mental, and moral strength desired, they have this confidence foundation established which creates the mindset that Marines can do anything,” said Gruny.

The MCRD Museum Foundation started off its program by presenting three Colonel Nate Smith Memorial Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, to two Marines and one sailor assigned the MCRD/WRR.

Recipients of the scholarships were GySgt Robyn Brown, H&S Battalion, MCRD; Sgt Robert Mobley II, 1st Bn, RTR, MCRD; and Petty Officer 3rd Class Xuejiao Thrash, Branch Dental Clinic, MCRD. PO Thrash was on emergency leave and could not attend the ceremony.

The scholarships are based on academic performance, community and extracurricular activities, and future potential. The awards were presented by Colonel Mike Lee, Chief of staff, MCRD/WRR, and Frank R. Motley, President of the MCRD Museum Foundation’s Board of Directors.
